Quick Learners!

We are proud to announce that our two new girls have completed their ground training during this sweltering 2419 heat! Sampeyre and her best buddy Wispani, at only five months of age, finished up sacking out today, 'Sammie' polishing up her new abilities only a few days behind 'Wisp'. Additionally, we can't not mention how fantastically Wisp is shaping up! After a month of pasture time, she seems to have bloomed yet again.

On another note, our custom Groningen boy Streetfighter has gained quite a few Dressage points within the last couple of months, which is a huge accomplishment for his breed. We can hardly contain our anticipation at the prospect of him gaining his BCh! It's been decades since we've had a Groningen gain a title.

What a Lovely Filly!

After strolling out to the youngstock pastures this afternoon to retrieve our two new fillies for training, I couldn't help but notice that Wisp was moving a little different! Once our afternoon ground training session got underway, I realized why:

She sprouted overnight! Her buddy Sammie, on the other hand, isn't noticeably different compared to last night. What a pleasant surprise! Nothing like high hopes for a foal exploding even higher.

We are very pleased to announce that our young mare Elini has earned her BCh in Dressage this morning! The stakes felt exceptionally high as we rolled into Northland for their competition at dawn, and the fog rolled away quickly to give way to quite the sweltering weather. We managed to keep cool rags over Elini and Avenue's backs long enough for them both to receive blue ribbons in both their Dressage and In-Hand classes, and trucked it home immediately after so as not to stress them out. Eli gained her final qualifying point with a score of 79.5661954024, nearly breaking into the 80s for the third time. She even brought home a High Point Earner ribbon and winnings, as well! With the ease she displayed at grabbing these fifteen points, we look to her future with excitement.

Planning the 202 Groningen Crop

Is it that time of year again already?! We've had some very successful Azteca breedings as of late, and are now working to bring that same success into the Groningen herd! This poor group of horses seems invariably struck with bad luck, and lately there have been very few exceptions. Such a limited handful of horses leads us to need to work with whatever we have, and so unfortunately, our latest Groningens born (Vancouver and Sunni) are afflicted with two copies of the gene for genetic disorder. However, we have given both mares a chance, as they have shown us a moderate step up in quality from their parents.  Having said that, we are breeding 5 year old Vancouver rather young now that they have filled out, so that she (and soon, Sunni as well) can pass on her lines in the prime of her life before being able to happily retire.

Shocks, on the other hand, is now reaching 17 years old, and we are looking to get one last nice foal from her before she can retire. While she has regressed into quite the pasture puff in recent years, thanks in part to an injury she is just recovering from this month, she has a lot to offer our rare herd.

We will be breeding both Vancouver and Shocks to our best Groningen stallion currently available, our custom boy Streetfighter (and crossing all available appendages that we don't have more GD affected foals!).

Year 201 Newborns

Just today, we were extremely pleased to find our heavily pregnant mares Snake Oil (our favorite) and Winged Saint nearing delivery! We had held off on breeding any more mares for quite a while in order to place more focus on the training of our older horses, but after the tragic loss of Viper's highly promising colt Frascarolo to a training accident, and those older horses nearing completion of their training, we lacked any reason not to. By evening, their light signs of labor had turned into chaos in the foaling barn! Viper seemed a bit more agitated, and soon after, we found the richest sorrel filly laying next to her.

Introducing...

Our slight disappointment in her carrying genetic disorder is easily shadowed by the promise we have for this filly. We fell in love almost instantly! As mentioned in our previous introductory post, her sire is the famed Orillo, a direct son of our legendary Nidora, the mare who started our addiction to the Azteca breed. Even if she doesn't seem to show much flair during training, we will likely carry her into the showring long enough for her to gain her BCh and retire as a broodmare, due to her very special, old lineage. The only other direct descendant of Orillo that has remained a staple in our bloodline is Ortigio, who can be found in most of our horses. It was a risk using our meager remaining Orillo straws on such an aged broodmare, but hopefully, 'Sammie' will prove to us that she was worth the risk.

Having witnessed Sammie's birth, we turned our attention to Wings, who seemed to have gone into hard labor contagiously. Mere minutes after Viper, she dropped an equally anticipated (and experimental) filly!

Introducing...

'Wisp' was an experimental breeding, as we have been contemplating selling her dam due to her extreme drop-off in fertility. While scouring ads for that perfect stallion, we came across Steppennwolf, who grabbed our attention immediately. His colorful coat and obvious ability seemed to overtake our policy of only breeding to stallions holding competition titles. For the last ten months, we have drooled over our mental images predicting what this foal would look like, and we were not let down! Wisp has a lovely color, full of corn marks that almost hide her barred legs and shoulders. If not for her roan gene, the color 'blue roan' could not possibly have been more fitting! Wisp seems to have solid lineage and has been an absolute sweetheart since imprinting, and we are excited to begin her training next month.

I don't think we could possibly pick a favorite between the two! Sammie holds such sentimental value, and such intricate knowledge of each horse in a pedigree is priceless to us. On the other hand, it will be very interesting to see Wisp grow and hopefully morph into a prestigious Dressage mare! Her blue sheen and lightly spotted coat shouldn't hesitate to catch the judges' eyes.

Recent Achievement

Earlier this month, our newest stallion Occhiello gained his BCh! Here at Prophecy, we keep our mares minimum and stallions as close to zero as possible. Having said that, if we do have a boy born into our family, there is much pressure for him to prove himself worthy of his stall very early on. Cello, on the other hand, has had an advantage over the typical stallion, as he was a repeat breeding of young stallion Occhieppo who was very clearly an up-and-coming star. 'Chio', as he was dubbed, snagged his BCh early in life before succumbing to an unfortunate near-fatal accident that left him tragically disabled. This strange affliction affected all but a select few in our herd, and luckily, his dam managed to survive unscathed. The cross between Pipia and Oleggio seemed to simply scream potential, and thus, Cello came into the world soon after. We have taken our sweet time raising and training him, perfecting his every move so that we are proud to watch him set hoof in the ring as the heir to the Prophecy Performance Horses broodmare band. Within the last two months, his Dressage scores have skyrocketed into the 80s! We are infinitely pleased with him so far, and are glad we gave him the chance he otherwise may not have gotten.
